Final Magic Moments

The last day of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics is upon us. The sun is about to set on what has been a magical experience for me. I didn't think I was going to have this much fun.

Let's see if the Canadian Men can bring home one more magic moment, a moment like this English Bay Sunset.

Speeding towards the finish line

Arriving at a Canada Line Skytrain station. Four second exposure.

Hard to believe this experience is almost over. Tomorrow is the big day for the Men's Hockey team. They said we couldn't win four in a row. I am confident we will light up Mr. Miller tomorrow.

Golden 13

I hope you will view this one larger.

Sun rises on day 13 of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Catching the helicopter back to Vancouver today after a four day rest with my family in Victoria.

Looking forward to the final push for gold in women's and men's hockey, curling, as well as a potential medal for our courageous figure skater Joannie Rochette. Medal or not, she has shown what Olympians are made of.

Panoramic Elevation

large | original | follow me

I spent a cold half-hour on Granville Street Bridge the day before the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games opened. I was there to capture the lightshow over English Bay called Vectorial Elevation. I knew I wanted to post a panorama but have not had the time to do the post-processing. Hope you like it. The lights are controlled by people from all over the world via Internet.

The Olympic Cauldron lit by The Great One (aka TGO), Wayne Gretzky, sits on the Vancouver waterfront facing the North Shore mountains where a lot of the amazing Winter Olympic sports are being staged.

The weather has been a little warm this year. Quite the opposite of last year when Vancouver was buried in snow by what we referred to as "snowmageddon". I guarantee you folks, It is a lot more fun this year. Vancouver has two snowplows and one is broken. Just kidding Mayor Gregor ;-)

The Caprice is Twitterfied

World City

Vancouver's coming out party is well under way. We're now well established as a place to be. A place of beauty, culture, sport and business.

Bring it! We'd love to see you here.

This is the Vancouver Convention Centre, shot from a helicopter. This is where the traditional media are hunkered down in their studios. We social media types are roving the streets, reporting on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, etc.

Choose your stream. Love the historic Marine Building in the background on the left...

Note Fisgard Lighthouse in the lower left of this composition. This was taken from a Single Otter operated by Harbour Air. I caught this plane home to Vancouver Island on Saturday and, as you can see, it was very windy.

The Fisgard Lighthouse is an historical structure at the southern tip of Vancouver Island in the city of Greater Victoria. I work several days a week in Vancouver, but Victoria is where my wife, daughter and I have our family home.

Come visit, world!

In the meantime, it's back to the Olympic city tomorrow morning.

Can't wait to jump back in the fray.

The Social Media Olympics

large | original | follow me

A citizen reporter captures the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza by The Great One Wayne Gretzky while fireworks sparkle in the bokeh.

Photo by my friend Kris Krug, a tireless and prolific documentor of world events from Copenhagen to Torino and now in his home town, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Watch things unfold on his stream and follow him on Twitter.

Post-processing by me.

The consensus is this Olympics is the one where social media comes of age and has the opportunity to be fully felt around the world. It is doing this in both coverage of sporting events and the cultural side of the Olympic experience.

Events in Vancouver have been discussed and shared withing seconds of their unfoldings. This is likely to grow as a phenomenon as people become more interested in exploring what they can do as citizens with their globally connected electronic devices.

In service of this my colleagues and I have created an online citizen media resource centre to help people understand the ins and outs of citizen reportage.

Please visit our True North Media House resource centre, get self-accredited as a citizen journalist, and join the rapidly growing ranks of over 100 people roving the streets and venues of Vancouver and Whistler with our credentials proudly displayed.

More importantly, join the ranks of those who now understand that in the social media-enabled world, people are listening. You need only speak.

Today moved me very deeply. The opening ceremonies produced by my fellow Canadians exceeded my expectations. The art, music, culture and style of my country was represented so brilliantly. I am so proud. I hope you all enjoyed it.

Four Seconds to City Centre

This is a four second exposure shot from the Canada Line public transit train arriving at City Centre station in Vancouver. 26 minutes from YVR to downtown. A person can go for a rather long lunch at Aberdeen Centre In Richmond even if you live downtown. I'll have the assorted beef soup, pls.

26 Minutes

The Canada Line allows Olympic visitors to travel by Skytrain from YVR to Waterfront in 26 minutes. It is an awesome addition to our city. I rode it from Yaletown to Waterfront tonight for the first time. It is underground downtown but travels on an elevated track for most of the trek to Richmond and the Airport.

Eyes of the World

large | original | follow me

Dawn breaks on the first week of Olympic festivities in my home town of Vancouver, British Columbia. Opening ceremonies are on Friday and this week is packed with pre-Olympics events such as the openings of various country houses. Last-minute preparations are being wrapped up and security is now in full force.

I sincerely hope my fellow Vancouverites/British Columbians can put aside their disagreements about whether hosting the Olympics was a good idea or not and now come together to welcome visitors and viewers from the four corners of our planet.

The world is arriving. The investment we have made in this global gathering is enormous. If it is to reap benefits for all British Columbians it will now depend on our ability to pull this off well, to be good hosts, and to present our best face to those who might see the advantages of investing in our beautiful city and province. Focussing on our own internal debates as a society will surely have the opposite effect.

It is our time to shine.

One of the amazing things about the endless, beautiful expressions of life is the way they carry their progeny as an integral part of their inherent beauty.

Another of those amazing things is the repetition of pattern at different scales.
